“Walking pad” and “treadmill” are often used interchangeably in product listings, which does not help. Here is the distinction we use. A walking pad is a low, handrail-free deck mainly for walking that stores flat. A folding treadmill has an upright console and handrails, reaches higher speeds and folds up vertically. Some products sit in between, with an optional handrail that must be unscrewed before storage.
Quick decision
- Mostly walking, very little storage space, or you want to walk at a desk? A walking pad.
- Want to run, need handrails for confidence, or are you over about 120 kg? Look at a folding treadmill or a higher-rated pad.
- Very tight budget? Walking pads start lower (from about €100 in our research).
Side-by-side comparison
| Walking pad (e.g. T7) | Folding treadmill (e.g. Q8) | |

| Incline | 5% manual | 5% manual |
| Max user | 120 kg | 150 kg |
| Belt | 90 × 38 cm | 97 × 40 cm |
| Size in use | 105 × 47.5 × 10.5 cm | 120.6 × 65.3 × 111 cm |
| Net weight | 16 kg | 26.3 kg |

| Storage | Flat, under a sofa or bed | Folds upright; needs floor and wall space |

Where a walking pad wins
- Storage. A 10–13 cm deck slides under furniture. A folding treadmill still needs a corner.
- Desk use. No console gets in the way of a standing desk.
- Weight to move. 13–20 kg is manageable for one person. Upright treadmills are heavier and bulkier.
- Price. Entry prices are roughly half those of a folding treadmill.
Where a treadmill wins
- Running. Higher speeds and a longer, wider belt make jogging and running more comfortable.
- Stability and confidence. Full handrails and a safety key matter to many older users and beginners.
- Weight limits. Folding treadmills more often carry 130–150 kg ratings.
- Programs and feedback. Consoles with preset workouts suit people who like structure.
Space planning for Irish homes
Many Irish apartments and terraced houses do not have a spare room. Measure the area where you will use the machine, including the clear area your manual specifies behind it (often up to 2 m) and some space to each side. Then measure where it will live the rest of the time. For a walking pad, that means under-sofa or under-bed clearance of at least the deck height plus a centimetre or two. For a folding treadmill, you need the folded footprint and a safe way to wheel it there.
Upstairs rooms add another consideration: running produces much more impact noise than walking. If you live above neighbours, see our quiet walking pad guide.
Our suggestions
Walking only, small space: the T7 (check price) or Z3 (check price). Affiliate links
Some jogging, still compact: a 10 km/h pad such as the Q2 Pro (check price). Its belt is still short for proper running. Affiliate link
Running, handrails, higher weight limit: a folding treadmill such as the Q8 (check price). See our folding treadmill guide for alternatives. Affiliate link
Frequently asked questions
Is a walking pad a treadmill?
Technically yes: it is a motorised treadmill without a console or handrails, optimised for walking and flat storage.
Is walking on a walking pad as good as walking outside?
For time on your feet, broadly yes. Outdoors adds uneven ground, hills, fresh air and daylight. Many people use both.
Can older people use a walking pad safely?
Many do. If balance is a concern, a model with a handrail, or a folding treadmill with full rails, is a more cautious choice. Ask a healthcare professional if unsure.
