Walking Pads With Handrails in Ireland: Who Needs One and What It Costs

This guide contains affiliate links. Details are at the end of the page.

Most walking pads are flat decks with no handle, so they fit under a desk or sofa. Many can also be bought with a fold-up handrail, which gives you something to hold, often puts the controls at hand height, and makes some models usable for a light jog. This guide explains who benefits, what you give up, and which handrail models are sold in Ireland.

Key points

  • A handrail is worth it if you want extra steadiness, you are returning to exercise, or you would like buttons and a phone holder at hand height.
  • It is less useful at a standing desk, where the desk is in the way.
  • On Home Fitness Code’s T7, Q2 Pro, C1 and Z3 the handrail option adds €20; on the Y3 and Y5 it adds €30.
  • Handrail versions are slightly bigger and heavier, but they fold flat for storage.
  • A handrail is for balance, not for leaning on while walking. Check the weight limit either way.

Who is a handrail for?

  • People who want to feel steadier, for example when starting out, returning to exercise or walking with incline.
  • Anyone who likes controls at hand height. Handrail models typically add buttons and a phone or tablet holder, so you are not relying only on the remote.
  • Light joggers. On pads that reach 10 km/h, something to hold helps, although a proper folding treadmill is better for regular running.

When a handrail makes less sense: if you plan to use the pad under a standing desk, the handrail and desk compete for the same space. The flat version is simpler and cheaper. See our under-desk treadmill guide.

If you have a medical condition affecting balance, or you are unsure whether walking on a moving belt is safe for you, speak to your GP or physiotherapist first. A handrail helps with steadiness, but it does not make a treadmill suitable for everyone.

What the handrail adds (and costs)

  • Price: €20–€30 extra at Home Fitness Code.
  • Size: a few centimetres longer and wider. The T7 grows from 105 × 47.5 cm to 116 × 53 cm.
  • Weight: about 2–3.5 kg more. The T7 goes from 16 kg to 18 kg, the Z3 from 13 kg to 15 kg and the C1 from 17.5 kg to 21 kg, which matters if you lift it under a bed.
  • Storage: the handrails fold down, so the stated storage height stays close to the flat version.

Frequently asked questions

Are walking pads with handrails safer?

A handrail gives you something to hold for balance, which many people find reassuring. It does not replace starting slowly, using the safety key and following the manual.

Can a walking pad with a handrail still go under a desk?

You can fold the handrail down and use the pad as a flat deck, but a raised handrail and a standing desk usually get in each other’s way.

Does a handrail fold away?

On the models listed here, yes. The retailers list folded heights of about 10–13 cm for the Home Fitness Code models, so they can still slide under many sofas and beds.

How much more does a handrail cost?

At Home Fitness Code, €20 on the T7, Q2 Pro, C1 and Z3, and €30 on the Y3 and Y5 (checked 28 September 2026).
